Founded in 1948 by roller shutter and blind manufacturer Heinrich Weimar, the company is Europe's leading specialist in windows and doors for the container industry. ELA Container has been sourcing Weimar products since the 1990s, initially through intermediaries. Since 2003, Weimar GmbH has been manufacturing both windows and window accessories – including directly for ELA. In the early 2000s, development began on the company's best-selling product, the ‘Compact’ window system, which was developed in-house. A second-generation family company

The idea for ELA’s sophisticated room containers first came into being in 1972 when Bernhard Albers and his wife Elisabeth Albers founded the company ELA-Gesellschaft für Handel und Vermittlung GmbH & Co.
